Last week, we shared ideas for Facebook contests and tips for running a successful Facebook contests. In this post, we’ve got five tips for running a good social media contest, regardless of platform.
Know your end goal: Once you’ve figured out what kind of contest you want to run and how, figure out your objectives and what you ultimately want to achieve from the contest. Do you want to build your newsletter subscriber list? Do you want to obtain new customers? Pick a simple goal, especially if it’s your first contest. If this first one goes well and you achieve your goal, you can always host another after a few months.
Decide up front what type of contest you’ll have and how long it will run: Give people a specific window for entry into the contest and specific ways they can enter. Make the requirements simple and provide people a few options for entry: email address, sharing on Twitter/Facebook, sharing a photo on Instagram, or pinning something on Pinterest.
Moderate entries: Keep an eye on comments and posts in the contest. Make sure people are adhering to the rules and not going off on too many tangents. If a comment is unrelated to the contest, it’s okay to delete it. If the person really wanted to enter the contest, they wouldn’t have followed the rules.
Create hashtags: Pick a hashtag or two to include with the contest. For example, you could use your business name as the hashtag to follow the conversation about your contest. Hashtags allow people to participate whether or not they’re following you on social media.
Followup: When the contest is over, followup with the people who entered. You should definitely notify the winner(s) by email, but also thank the other entrants for entering and becoming a fan of your business.
